Lowercase s

Uppercase S

Similar S letters with different marks

Acute accent, caron and circumflex

Ś has an acute accent, š has a caron, and ŝ has a circumflex. Their capitals are Ś, Š and Ŝ. A caron opens upward like a v; a circumflex points upward like a roof.

Cedilla and comma below are distinct

Ş and ş have a cedilla. Ș and ș have a comma below. Some fonts make the marks look similar, but their character codes differ. Follow the spelling and character used in your source rather than choosing by appearance alone.

Dotted S and sharp S

Ṡ and ṡ have a dot above, while Ṣ and ṣ have a dot below. ß is called sharp S and is a separate letter, not an S with an accent. Its capital ẞ is available in the uppercase collection.

Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type s with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

Not every marked s has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For š, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.

No numeric keypad? Use the copy button or the Word method. If your laptop has an embedded keypad, check its own instructions for enabling it.

Type š with Alt + X in Word

In Word for Windows, 0161 is the hexadecimal value for š. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.

  • Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
  • Type 0161, without the U+ prefix.
  • Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
  • Check that the code has become š.

See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.
