Uppercase W

Which mark belongs on W?

Circumflex, acute and grave

Ŵ and ŵ have a circumflex. Ẃ and ẃ have an acute accent, while Ẁ and ẁ have a grave accent. Compare the direction of the sloping marks so you keep the original spelling.

One dot or two

Ẇ and ẇ have a dot above. Ẅ and ẅ have two dots above, called a diaeresis. Ẉ and ẉ have a dot below. The number and position of dots identify three different forms.

W with a ring

Lowercase ẘ has a ring above. Not every lowercase form in the collection has a matching precomposed capital. If the exact capital you need is missing, a base letter and combining mark may be required.

Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type w with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

Not every marked w has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ŵ, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.

No numeric keypad? Use the copy button or the Word method. If your laptop has an embedded keypad, check its own instructions for enabling it.

Type ŵ with Alt + X in Word

In Word for Windows, 0175 is the hexadecimal value for ŵ. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.

  • Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
  • Type 0175, without the U+ prefix.
  • Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
  • Check that the code has become ŵ.

See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.
