Recognize the marks on B
A dot above or below
Ḃ and ḃ have a dot above the letter. Ḅ and ḅ have a dot below it. That position is part of the character, so check carefully when copying from a small screen or a scanned document.
A line below B
Ḇ and ḇ have a horizontal line underneath. This is a character with a diacritic, rather than a plain B with underline formatting. Copying ḇ keeps the line in the text even when formatting is removed.
Strokes and hooks
The collection also contains ƀ, ɓ and ƃ. These change the shape of b itself. If your source uses one of them, compare the stem and hook rather than choosing the closest-looking dotted B.
Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type b with an accent on Windows
Using a numeric keypad
Not every marked b has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ḃ, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.
Type ḃ with Alt + X in Word
In Word for Windows, 1E03 is the hexadecimal value for ḃ. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.
- Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
- Type 1E03, without the U+ prefix.
- Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
- Check that the code has become ḃ.
See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.
On a Mac, phone, or tablet
On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.
