The line in Đ and đ
Đ and đ have a stroke through the letter. A plain D with strikethrough formatting is not the same character. Copy the stroked letter itself when it is part of a name or word.
Why ď can look like d followed by a mark
The lowercase caron in ď often resembles a small apostrophe beside the stem. Its capital, Ď, has a more familiar v-shaped mark above. Do not replace ď with an ordinary d followed by punctuation.
Dots, lines and related letters
Ḋ has a dot above and Ḍ has a dot below; their lowercase forms are ḋ and ḍ. You will also find ḏ with a line below. Ð and ð are called eth and are distinct from the stroked forms Đ and đ.
Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type d with an accent on Windows
Using a numeric keypad
Not every marked d has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ď, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.
Type ď with Alt + X in Word
In Word for Windows, 010F is the hexadecimal value for ď. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.
- Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
- Type 010F, without the U+ prefix.
- Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
- Check that the code has become ď.
See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.
On a Mac, phone, or tablet
On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.
