Lowercase i

Uppercase I

Accents, dots and lines on I

The accent replaces the usual dot

In forms such as í, ì, î and ï, the accent appears where the dot of a plain lowercase i would normally be. Copy the complete character; you do not need to add an accent above a separate dot.

Dotted and dotless I

İ and ı are different characters from plain I and i. If a name includes either one, copy the exact form and case. Automatic uppercase conversion may depend on the language settings of the app you use.

A macron, ogonek or dot below

Ī and ī have a straight line above. Į and į have a small hook below, called an ogonek. Ị and ị have a dot below. Looking at both the top and bottom helps you distinguish them.

Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type i with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

To enter í, use Alt + 0237 with compatible Western Windows settings. Include the leading zero and check the result, since support depends on the app and system configuration.

  • Place the cursor in your text and turn on Num Lock.
  • Hold down the ALT key.
  • Type 0237 on the numeric keypad, not the number row above the letters.
  • Let go of ALT. The expected character is í.
No numeric keypad? Use the copy button or the Word method. If your laptop has an embedded keypad, check its own instructions for enabling it.

Type í with Alt + X in Word

In Word for Windows, 00ED is the hexadecimal value for í. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.

  • Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
  • Type 00ED, without the U+ prefix.
  • Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
  • Check that the code has become í.

See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.

I with an accent: common questions

Answers to help you choose the correct form and keep its marks intact.

Choose ï or Ï. The mark is a diaeresis; lowercase ï appears in naïve.

No. Dotless ı has its own Unicode value. Changing the font of i is not a reliable way to create it.

Ī and ī are I with macron. They differ from Í and í, which have a sloping acute accent.
