Q with accents and marks: copy and paste

This Q guide contains ɋ and its capital Ɋ. They have a hook tail rather than an accent above the letter. Choose the form you need from the buttons below.

Lowercase q

Uppercase Q

Q with a hook tail

Look at the tail

The defining feature of ɋ is its hook tail. It has a separate character code from ordinary q, even if the shapes appear close in a particular font. Copy the exact character when working from a reference.

Uppercase Ɋ and lowercase ɋ

Use Ɋ for the capital and ɋ for lowercase. Copying the desired case directly is useful when an editor or form does not handle less common case pairs as you expect.

If you need Q with a mark above

This collection does not include every possible Q-and-accent combination. Some forms need a plain Q followed by a combining mark. A hook-tail Q is not a substitute for Q with an acute accent, macron or dot.

Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

ALT codes and typing help for q with an accent

Check the label before using a number from this table. ALT entries are Windows keypad shortcuts. A “Unicode decimal” entry identifies the character but is not a standard ALT shortcut. Use the copy button or the Word method for those forms.

How to type q with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

Not every marked q has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ɋ, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.

No numeric keypad? Use the copy button or the Word method. If your laptop has an embedded keypad, check its own instructions for enabling it.

Type ɋ with Alt + X in Word

In Word for Windows, 024B is the hexadecimal value for ɋ. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.

  • Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
  • Type 024B, without the U+ prefix.
  • Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
  • Check that the code has become ɋ.

See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.

Q with an accent: common questions

Answers to help you choose the correct form and keep its marks intact.

Ɋ and ɋ are Q with hook tail. The change is in the shape of the letter, not an accent above it.

No. They are different Unicode characters. Compare their names and codes when the font makes them look similar.

The grid shows the Q forms in this collection. Other marked forms may need a base letter and a separate combining accent.
