Accents and shape changes on P
P with an acute accent
Ṕ and ṕ have one sloping mark above. Copy the full character so the accent remains attached when you paste. A quote mark next to P is a separate piece of punctuation.
P with a dot above
Ṗ and ṗ have a dot above the letter. Make sure the dot belongs to P when working from an image, especially if there is punctuation close to it.
A stroke or a hook
Ᵽ and ᵽ are P with stroke; Ƥ and ƥ are P with hook. These are different characters from plain P. Use their character names and codes if the shapes look unfamiliar in your font.
Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type p with an accent on Windows
Using a numeric keypad
Not every marked p has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ṗ, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.
Type ṗ with Alt + X in Word
In Word for Windows, 1E57 is the hexadecimal value for ṗ. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.
- Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
- Type 1E57, without the U+ prefix.
- Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
- Check that the code has become ṗ.
See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.
On a Mac, phone, or tablet
On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.
