Uppercase J

Compare the three J forms

A circumflex or a caron

Ĵ and ĵ have a roof-shaped circumflex. The mark on ǰ is a caron, shaped like a v. In lowercase, the accent takes the place of the usual dot. Check the direction of the mark before copying.

J with a stroke

Ɉ and ɉ contain a stroke through the letter. They are text characters, not an effect applied to plain J. Copying them preserves their identity when you paste without formatting.

When the capital is not a single character

The grid includes capital Ĵ and Ɉ, but not a precomposed capital J with caron. That form can be represented by J followed by a combining caron. Its appearance depends on how the font positions the mark.

Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type j with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

Not every marked j has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ĵ, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.

No numeric keypad? Use the copy button or the Word method. If your laptop has an embedded keypad, check its own instructions for enabling it.

Type ĵ with Alt + X in Word

In Word for Windows, 0135 is the hexadecimal value for ĵ. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.

  • Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
  • Type 0135, without the U+ prefix.
  • Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
  • Check that the code has become ĵ.

See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.

J with an accent: common questions

Answers to help you choose the correct form and keep its marks intact.

It is ĵ, J with circumflex. The uppercase form is Ĵ.

Its caron occupies the position normally used by the dot on lowercase j. That is the expected shape of the character.

Punctuation beside J is not the same as an accent attached to it. Copy the full character, or use a combining accent where needed.
