The stroke in Ł and ł

Ł and ł have a line crossing the letter. The stroke is part of the character and remains when pasted as plain text. It is different from a slash typed before or after an ordinary l.

Acute accent or caron

Ĺ and ĺ have an acute accent above. Ľ and ľ have a caron, which often resembles a small apostrophe beside the lowercase stem. That mark is part of ľ, not a separate punctuation character.

Dots and marks below

Ŀ and ŀ have a middle dot, while Ḷ and ḷ have a dot below. The forms Ḹ and ḹ add a macron as well as the dot below. Keep every mark when matching a character from a reference.

Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type l with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

Not every marked l has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ł, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.

No numeric keypad? Use the copy button or the Word method. If your laptop has an embedded keypad, check its own instructions for enabling it.

Type ł with Alt + X in Word

In Word for Windows, 0142 is the hexadecimal value for ł. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.

  • Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
  • Type 0142, without the U+ prefix.
  • Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
  • Check that the code has become ł.

See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.

On a Mac, phone, or tablet

On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.

L with an accent: common questions

Answers to help you choose the correct form and keep its marks intact.

It is Ł or ł, L with stroke. Copy it directly rather than placing a slash over a plain L.

No. The mark belongs to L with caron. A typed apostrophe creates a separate character.

Choose Ḷ or ḷ. If the letter also needs a line above, look for Ḹ or ḹ.
