Where is the mark on H?
Above and below are different
Ḣ and ḣ have a dot above; Ḥ and ḥ have a dot below. A faint dot may be difficult to see in a scan. Check its location before choosing a character for a name or reference.
Three marks above the letter
Ĥ carries a circumflex, ḧ carries two dots, and ȟ carries a caron. Their capitals are Ĥ, Ḧ and Ȟ. Compare the whole mark: a roof, two separate dots and a v are distinct shapes.
H with a stroke
Ħ and ħ have a line through the letter itself. Use the character button to retain that line in plain text. Applying strikethrough to H only changes formatting and will not produce the same character code.
Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type h with an accent on Windows
Using a numeric keypad
Not every marked h has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ḥ, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.
Type ḥ with Alt + X in Word
In Word for Windows, 1E25 is the hexadecimal value for ḥ. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.
- Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
- Type 1E25, without the U+ prefix.
- Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
- Check that the code has become ḥ.
See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.
On a Mac, phone, or tablet
On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.
